Every year, millions of Indians scramble at the last minute to file their Income Tax Return. But this year is different — Budget 2026 has changed how deadlines work, and filing on the wrong date could cost you penalties you never saw coming.
Here's everything you need to know — in plain language.
What's Changed in 2026?
Budget 2026 has linked ITR filing deadlines to the return form you use, rather than a single common date. This change aims to reduce last-minute rush and make compliance easier.
So the first question you need to ask is: Which ITR form applies to me?

Deadline Table for FY 2025–26 (AY 2026–27)
Who You Are? | ITR Form | Deadline |
Salaried, pensioner, interest income | ITR-1 / ITR-2 | 31 July 2026 |
Freelancer, consultant, small business (no audit) | ITR-3 / ITR-4 | 31 August 2026 |
Businesses requiring tax audit | ITR-3 / ITR-4 | 31 October 2026 |
Companies, LLPs | ITR-5 / ITR-6 | 31 October 2026 |
Salaried individuals, pensioners, and investors earning through salary, pension, one house property, or interest income and having no business income fall under the largest taxpayer category — their deadline remains July 31, 2026
Freelancers, professionals, and small business owners running non-audit businesses filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 have until August 31, 2026 — an extra month that accounts for the additional complexity of business income reporting.
What Happens If You Miss Your Deadline?
If you miss the deadline, you can still file a belated return till December 31, 2026, but a penalty of up to ₹5,000 applies, along with interest on unpaid tax dues.
Additionally, if you have capital losses, missing the deadline means you cannot carry them forward to offset future gains — a costly mistake for investors and traders.
Budget 2026 Bonus: More Time to Revise Your Return
Here's good news most people haven't heard yet. Earlier, revisions to ITRs were allowed only till December 31. Now, taxpayers can revise their returns up to March 31 by paying a small fee — helping fix mistakes without fear of penalties or notices.
